Set among the rolling hills and heather-clad glens of rural Scotland, an ancient historic castle sitting on more than 1,500 acres hit the market Friday asking for offers over £11.3 million (US$15.4 million).
Complete with crow-stepped gables and castellated turrets, the red sandstone castle is the crown jewel of the Creston estate and dates to the 13th century, according to listing agent Savills.
Careston Castle is Category A-listed, the most prestigious of Scotland’s three historic designations, and identifies it as “of special architectural or historical interest,” according to Historic Environment Scotland, which added that a listed building should “help to create Scotland’s distinctive character” and must be a “highly visible and accessible part of our rich heritage.”
Fitted with six bedrooms and four reception rooms, period character and original features abound throughout the home, including stone and timber flooring, intricately carved stone fireplace surrounds and elaborate wood paneling.
“Careston Castle was described in 1682 as ‘without debait [sic] the best gentleman’s house in the shyre,’” listing agent Evelyn Channing of Savills said. “The centerpiece of this highly attractive and readily accessible estate possesses all the iconic characteristics of a Scottish castle yet is a cherished and manageable family home.”
Mansion Global couldn’t determine the owners of the estate, which has been kept in the same family for close to 150 years, according to Savills.
Already secluded, given the size of the surrounding land, the privacy of the castle is “protected and enhanced” by the many mature trees and woodland that surrounds the house, the listing said.
Plus there are formal gardens, a tennis court, paved terraces, roses, and wide expanses of lawn.
Elsewhere on the property, there are additional accommodations, including cottages and a farmhouse, and the land includes swaths of farmland, forests, and pasture.
The property offers farming and sporting opportunities, including “an idyllic stretch of river to fish,” Ms. Channing said. There are also additional buildings on the property, which can be sold in whole or in lots, she added.
